Technological Advantages:
Lightweight and Thin:
Electronic ink display devices are typically very thin and light in weight, with a more robust and durable structure than conventional LCDs. These advantages make it difficult for portable device manufacturers not to favor them. Traditional LCD devices are limited by structural constraints, making it impossible for the thickness to be too thin (if the thickness of the two layers of glass for the LCD display is 0.7mm, the combined thickness of the two substrates is 0.5mm, then the thickness of the LCD display will not be less than 2mm). The weight cannot be too light either. The hardware structure of the electronic ink display device is quite simple, and its thickness can be about 1mm, less than half the thickness of the LCD display. In addition, the application range of electronic ink is quite extensive, and it can not only be used on glass surfaces but also on plastic and other materials, so it is not as fragile as an LCD display. The thickness of TFT LCD displays, the first-generation electronic ink displays, and future electronic ink displays are shown in the comparison below.
Low Power Consumption:
The power consumption of electronic ink is very low, and it can even display a picture when the power supply is briefly interrupted. Its very low power consumption is due to its very high reflectivity and contrast ratio, which means that it does not need to use backlighting to improve readability. In summary, display devices using electronic ink technology will have visual characteristics similar to paper media, while also having the advantages of low power consumption and thin and light weight, making it a new favorite for portable devices, especially suitable for applications that require good display effects under various light conditions, which are not able to be met by transmission-type LCD and reflection-type LCD.
Simple Process:
Electronic ink display devices can use the production equipment of AMLCD and the production process is simpler. Just apply the electronic ink to the ITO plastic substrate and attach it to the TFT substrate using the laminator process, which is the same as the polarizer attachment process in LCD production. This process can be produced using existing equipment or similar equipment. The simplification of the production process means an increase in yield and output, and the reduction in substrate thickness also leads to a significant reduction in cost (of course, it is still higher than the cost of paper manufacturing).
